Annual Jamaican Emancipation Day Commemorative Lecture

Each August, Vaughan Woods & Historic Homestead commemorates Jamaican Emancipation Day through a special lecture. As stewards of a site whose history is intertwined with the Atlantic slave economy, we believe it is important to observe the abolition of slavery in the British West Indies while also exploring the broader histories, voices, and knowledge systems that have too often been overlooked. From the legacies of slavery to Indigenous understandings of place, we invite audiences to consider the many ways people choose to experience, remember, and interpret the past.

2026 Featured Lecture: Penobscot’s Sense of Place
What if the names on a map weren't just labels—but an ancient, living GPS system?

Join James Francis, Director of Cultural and Historic Preservation and Tribal Historian for the Penobscot Nation, as he explores how Wabanaki language and oral traditions transform the landscape of Maine into a living map of memory, ecology, and belonging. Through the concept of place literacy, Francis reveals how rivers, mountains, and coastlines have long served as navigational guides, seasonal calendars, and repositories of cultural knowledge. Penobscot's Sense of Place offers a compelling new way of seeing the Maine landscape through an Indigenous lens, reminding us that history lives not only in archives and monuments, but also in language, storytelling, and our enduring relationship with the land.

It’s the fantasy quest of a lifetime…and everyone‘s got an excuse to get out of it. When all the mighty Heroes of Legend are trapped under an evil spell, lesser-known heroes from warriors to wizards are gathered to go save the day. One problem: everyone has a tale to tell about why they can’t go on a quest just now. Are the Enchanted Lands doomed?

Admission is by donation.

Enjoy some refreshments at Old South Church while you decorate a little canvas bag to collect all of your parade candy.

Vaughan Field Park, near Middle & Lincoln Streets.

Kids K Race will start after the Old Hallowell Day Road Race. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $5 per entry.

9am - 3pm - Old Hallowell Day Sturgeon Search

‍Water Street.

Swing by the OHD Committee Information Booth located at Central & Water Street to snag your Sturgeon Search sheet.

‍After the parade, stop by our booth to purchase and decorate your own quilt square. Add your story, your family’s name, a favorite memory, or something uniquely you.

Old Hallowell Day 2026 Artist, Cassie Sano, will lead a unique art activity for people of all ages. Come create with Cassie!

The Children's Center of Augusta hosts this hands-on environment that invites children to explore sensory-rich activities that emphasize creativity, development, and connection. This tent offers a joyful, judgment-free space for families to come together and experience the magic of sensory play together.

‍The Capital Area New Mainers Project hosts the 6th annual International Kids Festival! Join us for international music, games, food, and more at the Hallowell Multicultural Center. Admission is free!
